Observation Narrative
Plot is located on an upper, convex ravine slope above the Potomac River, near the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Vegetation is a submesophytic forest of white oak, hickory, and beech. Large, mature Quercus alba dominate the overstory, with scattered individuals of Fagus grandifolia, Carya alba, and Carya glabra. Fagus dominates all understory layers, and oak recruitment is absent. Over most of the growing season, a diverse assemblage of dry- mesic herbs is present, but the early spring aspect is dominated by dense cover of Claytonia virginica.
